Profiles: Recording the Builders While They Are Still Building
Most business history is written after the outcome is known, which is precisely when it becomes least useful.

Most business history is written after the outcome is known, which is precisely when it becomes least useful. Retrospective coverage flattens. Once a company succeeds, every earlier decision is narrated as inevitable; once it fails, the same decisions are re-read as warning signs anybody should have seen. Neither version helps the person deciding this week, with incomplete information and a payroll to meet.
SEVENTYONE Premier's profile work is built to sit earlier in that timeline — with operators mid-process, while the answer is still unknown.
Documenting uncertainty
The interview format is deliberately awkward. What are you unsure about right now? What did you believe a year ago that you no longer believe? What would you reverse if the capital allowed it? Which part of this business works only because you are personally in the room? Those answers are difficult to give and impossible to reconstruct honestly later, because memory edits toward the outcome.
The most valuable interview is the one conducted before the answer is obvious.
Range over hierarchy
Founders are covered, but they are not the whole story of a company. The series also records the operators, designers, coaches, technicians, tailors and site managers whose judgement determines whether a plan survives contact with reality, and whose work almost never reaches print. In practice these are the most instructive conversations, because the detail is specific: how a shift is run, how a sample is corrected, how a fault is diagnosed.
Craft of the record
Profiles are long-form, sat-down and revisited. Subjects are interviewed more than once over time, so a reader can see how a position changed and what caused the change. Photography is made on location during working hours rather than staged, and quotes are published as spoken. Where a claim cannot be verified, it is attributed as the subject's view rather than presented as fact.
An archive with a purpose
Over years, the series is intended to work as a practical record for the next generation of African builders — a body of evidence about how companies on this continent are actually assembled, by whom, and at what cost. That is a different ambition from publicity, and it takes far longer to pay off.
